Mercury

2026 | Oil on Canvas | 48 x 60 in

Mercury isolates the messenger god from Reinhold Begas’s sculptural group Mercury and Psyche, removing the accompanying figure and most of the original narrative. The raised arm, lifted chest, and sweeping drapery drive the composition upward, while the partially withheld face keeps attention on the body’s structure rather than individual identity. Layered glazes give the marble form the warmth and tension of living flesh against a dark ground. Separated from the larger group, Mercury becomes a study of exertion and ascent—muscular, suspended, and poised between effort and flight.
